Every Hour of TV You Watch May Shorten Your Life by 22 Minutes

Every Hour of TV You Watch May Shorten Your Life by 22 Minutes

For many years, people have said that watching too much television can rot the brain. While that is not exactly true, a recent study in Australia concluded that watching too much television can in fact shorten one’s lifespan. 11,000 participants who were all over the age of 25 were tracked in this survey.

It is not that there is a specific direct correlation between the television shows that one watches and the length of life. It is due to the fact that watching television is a sedentary activity. When watching television, one is on a couch or a recliner. There is little physical activity that is happening if any at all. Many times, there are also fatty and unhealthy snacking that goes hand in hand with watching television.

The same thing could be said for people who spend most of their day in front of a computer screen. Life expectancy can drop in the person who is sitting in front of the computer screen each and every day.

When spending excessive amounts of time in front of a television, one is more likely to lead a lifestyle that is less active. This fact equates into a shorter lifespan. This does not necessarily mean that the television set needs to be thrown out, it simply means that a person needs to get out and enjoy life. There are too many exciting opportunities out there, so turn off the television and improve your quality of life. You can still watch some TV, but as with everything it should be done in moderation.

Starbucks Courtesy Guide

Starbucks Courtesy Guide

If you visit Starbucks on occasion for a gourmet coffee, there are some things you should know. Many people don’t have common courtesy towards Starbucks. Even more people don’t realize that they should have a special kind of courtesy that goes beyond basic manners towards Starbucks. Here is a courtesy guide to help you make sure you order the right way from your local Starbucks franchise.

Order in their terms

By that I mean use their language for cup sizes, menu items and any other service request. Starbucks is a sophisticated establishment that demands the respect of its customers. Well, maybe not demands it, but certainly appreciates it.You should get familiar with their terms. If you don’t know them, you can ask your friends who frequently order from Starbucks. Additionally, if you are feeling brave, you can ask one of the baristas; they will educate you.

Do not request refills

This may be alright in fast-food and sit down restaurants, but not in a coffee shop, especially Starbucks. The proper etiquette is to order a whole new coffee; that is, if you really want another coffee. However, many Starbucks customers don’t order more than one coffee; it looks slightly immature. You should be able to operate with only one cup of caffeine and coffee beans with hints of vanilla or caramel.Act professionally

Who is the target audience for Starbucks? If you guessed businessmen and businesswomen dressed sharply and on their way to an executive meeting, you guessed right. How would someone like that act? People like that have their act together. They know where they are going in life, and they won’t let anyone stop them. However, they still remain polite and reserved. Maintain a mindset like that. Conclusion

Adopt these concepts in your lifestyle and you will have the right type of courtesy when ordering from Starbucks. Remember, don’t forget to be classy.

Tips for small business homepage design

Tips for small business homepage design

Every small business owner is looking to carve out their own little corner of the web and capitalize on the billions of internet users worldwide. In regards to websites, this means that it can be tough to make a homepage that will not only intrigue new customers, but drive up revenue and create a loyal following. With a few simple steps, small business owners can make websites pop out to customers and keep them coming back.

The first step is to skip the default websites. Many web-hosting and web design companies offer free templates to their customers. They have a drag-and-drop style setup that allows customers to input their information and pictures, and the pages are created automatically. These websites are a dime and dozen and offer very little in the way of customization. Opting for a paid template or a dedicated web designer will allow for creative freedom, a more ergonomic design, and drive customers past the homepage and into the products or services.

The second mistake that many small business owners make is bogging down the homepage with too much information. Instead of listing off testimonials, locations, hours, phone numbers, pictures, and products, the mantra of ‘less is more’ can be used. Products should be restricted to top-selling items or sales while reviews and testimonials should be saved for dedicated pages. Contact information, such as phone numbers and email addresses, should remain clearly visible, near the top of the page, and eye-catching.

The homepage of a small business’ website can be likened to a storefront. Information should be concise, pertinent, and draw the customers in. With a few small tweaks to a page, companies will instantly have access to billions of internet users around the world.

Touchscreens Explode in Popularity

Touchscreens Explode in Popularity

With the launch of Apple’s iPhone, touchscreen technology has become a mainstream feature in consumer electronics. Since then, many other companies have adopted it for use in their own devices. The now ubiquitous touchscreen is found in nearly every new mobile phone, and is quickly becoming a mainstay of user interfaces in nearly all consumer electronic devices.

The touchscreen display market is now growing at an incredible ten times the rate of the market for displays that do not incorporate the technology. Earnings from touchscreen displays are projected at $13.4 billion dollars by the end of 2011, a jump of approximately ninety percent over the previous year, which turned a profit of just over seven billion dollars. In the next six years, touchscreen revenue is expected to almost double again, turning out nearly twenty four billion dollars in 2017.

Most display technologies do not even turn a profit in the modern day price-slashing market for electronics. Price wars have become so intense that most manufacturers of non-touchscreen displays actually lose money each year by selling their products. Even touchscreens only turn between a five and fifteen percent profit each year, but given the size of the market for them, this becomes an immense source of income for their manufacturers.

The need for touchscreens was at first almost entirely due to their use in mobile phones, but many other devices are now using them. Tablet PC’s are becoming increasingly popular with consumers and represent a quickly growing share of the market. The screens are also seeing increased demand in digital cameras, eBooks, gaming systems, and many other products.

Although the touchscreen market is expected to continue growing, an emerging technology may have the potential to take over the market in the future. The Xbox 360 can now use Microsoft’s Kinect technology, an interface that allows user input by hand gestures without the need for any touch sensitive device at all.

Groupon Abandons Misleading Accounting Metric

Groupon Abandons Misleading Accounting Metric

Groupon is a website dedicated to providing customers with information to help them find the “deal of the day” on specific products in local areas. It has attracted investors over the years by reporting quarterly profits. However, criticism of its accounting metric has caused it to abandon it for more truthful practices, revealing that it has actually been losing money the entire time. The previously used accounting metric was known as ACSOI, or Adjusted Consolidated Segment Operating Income. It allowed the web based company to report profits before taking into account the costs of acquiring new service subscribers and paying out stock option benefits to its shareholders. This has led many investors to believe that the company made over eighty million dollars in profit in the first quarter of 2011. In reality, the company actually lost nearly one hundred and fourteen million dollars overall during the quarter, and has continued to lose money throughout the current quarter. The use of ACSOI has allowed Groupon to fool investors into buying stocks when most of them would have opted to turn and run from the company had they known the truth about its lack of profits.

Groupon still claims that it will become profitable down the road when it grows larger, but this is difficult to believe given its lack of profits at its already large size. The company’s business model also provides no evidence that this will occur. Websites like Facebook increase in value as they grow because consumers are able to connect with more people, which is their entire reason for using the company in the first place. Groupon, however, does not become more useful as the size of its user network increases because the individuals do not contribute to the company by their membership.

It is common business wisdom that companies should focus on becoming profitable before allowing themselves to grow. Groupon did not follow this model, and exploded in size while it was still turning a negative profit.

Top 5 Ways to Use Google+ Circles

Top 5 Ways to Use Google+ Circles

1. Separate coworkers from the rest of them. There’s no need to seem unprofessional by either cursing in your Google+ posts or putting up inappropriate photos. In fact, you can still do those things! Just make sure you’re posting the bad stuff to the right Circles by leaving out your coworkers. This can also work with those necessary “personal days.” Posting “I’m on the beach right now!” is probably a bad idea on Facebook. But in Google+, your coworkers will never see it as long as you have them in their very own Circle.

2. Make Circles for your hobbies. Your yacht club is not interested in the knitting project you finally finished, but I bet your knitting group is. Put everyone in your knitting group in the ‘Knitting’ Circle and post relevant items there only.

3. Connect with customers. That’s right, put your Google+ account on your business card. Let them join your ‘Customer’ Circle. Then use it for ad placement, product pushing, and information about the services you want them to purchase. Hey, sometimes all it takes is hearing about it or reading it again.

4. Separate your family from your friends. Your friends don’t want to see the pictures taken at Aunt Edna’s birthday party, but your mom does. Additionally, use this type of Circle to keep your mom from seeing suggestive items that you post.

5. Put an ‘ex’s Circle. Post “I’m so lonely tonight!” and time the response. You won’t be disappointed.
